Past indefinite tense definition in Hindi: जब किसी कार्य को भूतकाल में सामान्य रूप से होने का बोध हो, तो उसे Past Indefinite Tense कहते है|

Past Indefinite tense Example Sentences Hindi to English –

  1. I ate food.  – मैंने खाना खाया|
  2. You did this work. – तुमने यह काम किया|
  3. He abused me. – उसने मुझे गाली दी|
  4. You did not try. – आपने कोशिश नहीं की।
  5. He wanted to beat me. – वह मुझे पीटना चाहता था।
  6. They used to smoke. – वे धूम्रपान करते थे।
  7. She used to cheat me. – वह मुझे धोखा देती थी।
  8. Sita did not used to sing. – सीता गाती नहीं थी।

Past indefinite tense structure

Affirmative – Subject + V2 + object.

Example sentences –

  1. She came yesterday.  – वह कल आया|
  2. They helped the poor. –  उन्होंने गरीबों की मदद की।
  3. Ram wanted to go to Pune. – राम पुणे जाना चाहता था।
  4. He wanted to be a doctor. – वह एक डॉक्टर बनना चाहता था|

Negative – Subject + did + not + V1 + object.

Example sentences –

  1. She did not come yesterday. – वह कल नहीं आई थी|
  2. They did not help the poor. – उन्होंने गरीबों की मदद नहीं की।
  3. Ram did not want to go to Pune. – राम पुणे नहीं जाना चाहता था।
  4. He did not want to be a doctor. – वह डॉक्टर नहीं बनना चाहता था।

Interrogative – Did + Subject + V1 + Object + ?

Example sentences –

  1. Did she come yesterday? – क्या वह कल आई थी?
  2. Did they help the poor? – क्या उन्होंने गरीबों की मदद की?
  3. Did Ram want to go to Pune? – क्या राम पुणे जाना चाहता था?
  4. Did he want to be a doctor? – क्या वह डॉक्टर बनना चाहता था?

Interrogative and Negative – Did + Sub + not + V1 + Object + ?

Example sentences –

  1. Did she come yesterday? – क्या वह कल नहीं आई थी?
  2. Did they help the poor? – क्या उन्होंने गरीबों की मदद नहीं की?
  3. Did Ram want to go to Pune? – क्या राम पुणे नहीं जाना चाहता था?
  4. Did he want to be a doctor? – क्या वह डॉक्टर नहीं बनना चाहता था?

Wh Question – Wh-words + did + Subject + V1 + object + ?

Example sentences –

  1. Why did she come yesterday? – वह कल क्यों आई?
  2. Why did they help the poor? – उन्होंने गरीबों की मदद क्यों की?
  3. Where did Ram want to go? – राम कहाँ जाना चाहता था?
  4. What did he want to be? – वह क्या बनना चाहता था?

Some Important use of Past Indefinite Tense in Hindi

यदि किसी वाक्य से बीते हुए समय के आदतन क्रिया को बतलाया जाए, तब वह वाक्य Past Indefinite Tense का होगा| बीते हुए समय के आदतन क्रिया को बतलाने के लिए often, always, daily, everyday / week / month / year etc. का प्रयोग किया जाता है|

Example –

  1. She always came late.
  2. My friend often invited me to dinner.

Note – Past की habit को बतलाने के लिए used to का भी प्रयोग किया जाता है|

Example –

  1. I used to walk in the morning.
  2. Alok used to take tea daily.

यदि किसी वाक्य में ago, yesterday, last week, last month, last year, Saturday last, in 1997 etc. के प्रयोग समय को बतलाने के लिए किया जाये, तब वह वाक्य Past Indefinite Tense का होगा|

Example –

  1. Manish came here yesterday.
  2. You did not complete this work last night.

Past time की दो साथ-साथ होनेवाली क्रिया को बतलाने के लिए Past indefinite Tense का प्रयोग किया जाता है|

Example –

She cooked while the children played. – बच्चों के खेलने के दौरान वह खाना बनाती थी।

जब Past Time की कोई जारी रहने वाली क्रिया के बीच कोई दूसरी घटना घटी हो तो दूसरी घटना Past indefinite tense का होगा|

Example –

  1. When I was sleeping, you came.
  2. When she was watching T.V., her father arrived.

वर्तमान समय के अधूरी Desire / Wish / Condition को बतलाने के लिए If / If only / As if / I wish / As though / It is time etc. के साथ भी Past Indefinite Tense का प्रयोग किया जाता है|

Example –

  1. I wish I were a king.
  2. He speaks as if he were the Prime minister.
